Armin Hofmann - Farbe

For anyone in Zürich over the next month, I highly recommend to visit Galerie Susanna Kulli, where there will be an exhibition of graphic designer Armin Hofmann's work, organised by Fabienne Ruppen and Christof Nüssli, on show from 30 August to 28 September 2012.

The opening reception will occur on Wednesday 30 August from 18:00 at the gallery (located at Dienerstrasse 21, 8004 Zürich), where Fabienne and Christof will welcome you with beer and sausages.

Hofmann was born in 1920 in Winterthur and is particularly well known for his black-and-white posters. He worked for various cultural organisations, did projects for public spaces in Switzerland that are still recognised today, and taught graphic design in both Switzerland and the USA.

Ruppen and Nüssli's project focuses on a lesser known aspect of Hofmann's practice, namely his use of colour (Farbe), which can be seen in the exhibition's centrepiece, a silkscreen portfolio.

As the organisers describe: 'A lifelong creative interest, issues of color have played a crucial role especially in his decades-long work as a teacher and in his art for public spaces. In addition to the silkscreen portfolio, the show presents manuscripts and original designs from Hofmann’s private archive as well as problems he assigned in his classes.' The exhibition Farbe exposes works which show a different side to Hofmann's practice, one in which he, as Ruppen and Nüssli write, 'deliberately eschewed light-dark contrasts, which are crucial in the posters, to focus exclusively on the study of color as such and its effects.'

In addition to the exhibition, there will also be a programme of evening events held at Galerie Susanna Kulli. They are:

Thursday 6 September
Teaching color (in German)
A panel discussion with Marcella Wenger-Di Gabriele (Haus der Farbe, Zurich), Ulrich Bachmann (Institute of Colour and Light, Zurich), and Moritz Zwimpfer (graphic designer and writer, Basel)

Thursday 13 September
Have you noticed? Color as an interface between art and architecture (in German)
A conversation between Mike Guyer (Gigon/Guyer architects, Zurich) and Adrian Schiess (artist, Zurich), moderated by Stefan Wagner (independent art historian, Zurich)

Both events begin at 19:30 and admission is free.
